SETI Institute launches the application of computers and smartphones to hunt aliens - and we can participate
The scientists who spent decades in front of the telescope had not yet found the aliens. So, they need your help. If you are moved to help, this is how.
Although this post is not mysterious, comforting or scary, but I think most of you would like this information.
Some of us are there who aspires to be a treasure hunter. Others become a monster hunter. And partly alien hunter.
For those who aspire to be an alien hunter, maybe you feel the lack of sophisticated technology resources. But do not worry. Now you can start hunting only with a home computer or a smartphone. No
half-hearted, your partner in hunting is the SETI Institute (Search for
Extra Terrestrial Life Institute), an organization that dedicates
itself to look for signs of extraterrestrial life. They have sophisticated equipment, you just need to put the eyes and ears well.
Currently
SETI has launched an application called SetiQuest Explorer with the
expectations of the user's computer or smartphone (Or an alien hunter)
can participate in the search for extraterrestrial life. This application can be used on smartphones based on Android 2.2 and will be used in the iphone in the next few months. There is also a desktop version that can be used in the computer (you need the Flash Player 10.2 for run).
According to Jill Tarter, director of the SETI Institute, the application aims to harness the brain power in the world. Computers
are good at recognizing patterns that already exist, but they are not
particularly good at identifying patterns that have not been identified.
Therefore, the SETI requires humans to perform that task.
Jill Tarter
By
leveraging the user's smartphone and computers, SETI hopes to maximize
human resources to help them find signs of extraterrestrial life.
This is how it works:
SetiQuest Explorer application will receive radio signals captured by the Allen Telescope in Northern California. Telescopes
are capable of reaching the stars outside our solar system, including
the stars that have planets identified as a planet that NASA is in the
habitable zone (Zone which can accommodate life). So his ability is unquestioned.
Allen Telescope Array
After receiving the signal, it will display it in the form of lines, dots black and white or other views to the volunteers. Your job is to look for patterns in the signals.
The problem is that the signals are sometimes just sounds like random noise is erratic. Moreover, if the telescope captures radio signals, not necessarily signal comes from outer space.
But not to worry because this application will provide assistance. He
will provide a comparison with other signals emanating from the earth,
like a CB radio signals, satellites, aircraft or other sources. If the pattern is the same, then you can ignore it.
If the pattern is different, there is a possibility if you're receiving a "message" communications from the aliens. Until now, the message had never been found.
"We're looking for anomalies, patterns that have not been identified." Tarter said. "We want people to help us to find something we do not know."
So the challenge is to find a particular signal, while we ourselves do not know exactly what kind of signal we are looking for.
SETI has been trying to find signs of life for 40 years. This time Tarter hope their efforts can be strengthened with the help of people from all over the world.
So, for those of you who want to help the SETI effort, you can enter the site http://explorer.setiquest.org. Then login with your facebook account or gmail. If you want to be careful, you can create a new email account to be used as a login.
After that, you'll get a notification if there is a signal that caught the telescope. It
was also cut pictures from google sky that shows the target location
and description appears on a computer screen or your smartphone. If you click the "continue", then the radio signal is captured will be displayed. You can look for patterns and report them immediately.
This task will be sent to the many volunteers in the world. And if it identified a pattern that is not known, then the discovery will be evaluated by the SETI.
So, anyone who feels like to hunt now?
By
participating you can probably get a little picture of how the SETI
search for signs of extraterrestrial life or at least do not suppose
you're learning to be an amateur astronomer. Who knows ......
